Art and music in the HBF collection

Catherine Nichols and Sven Beckstette in conversation
The collection presentation “Nationalgalerie. A collection for the 21st century” in the Hamburger Bahnhof shows a multi-voiced panorama of the Berlin art scene and the city itself from the threshold of the fall of the Wall to the present day. The presentation also includes numerous artists who work with music and sound and whose records are in the collection. In a conversation, the curators Catherine Nichols and Sven Beckstette address the interaction between art and music using audio examples from Joseph Beuys, Isa Genzken, Klaus Killisch, Martin Kippenberger, Emeka Ogboh, Wolfgang Tillmans, among others.

The new presentation of the collection of the Museum Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart has been on display since last summer. I am delighted that my painting “Der entfesselte Zuckermann” is part of the exhibition. 80 works of art, including paintings, works on paper, sculptures, photographs and videos, reflect the polyphonic panorama of the Berlin art scene and the city from the threshold of the fall of the Wall to the present day. Empyrion

(meaning “in the fire“) is a reimagining of Stockhausen’s Gesang der Jünglinge composed with voice, effect pedals, and percussion. The text in the booklet borrows from the 18th century classic Chinese novel, Dream of the Red Chamber, which is also the source for the popular Chinese soap opera Song of Youth. Empyrion comes as an edition of vinyl LPs 12″ with painted B-sides and a booklet. It was created in collaboration with poet Robert Fitterman and musician ambientfunk and is published by edition liane.
