Das blaue Zimmer
Das Blaue Zimmer transformed the new spaces of Galerie Wilfriede Maaß in Berlin’s Gipsstraße into an immersive painting. Walls and ceiling were painted ultramarine blue, while large figures inspired by William Blake remained as light areas, articulated with delicate charcoal drawings.
Painted ceramics were integrated directly into the wall paintings. Vessels, figures, painting, and architecture became part of a single pictorial space.
The installation extended an idea first explored in Feuerbachs Zimmer in 1992. There, the wall paintings were still contained within grey frames. In Das Blaue Zimmer, these boundaries disappeared: the painting continued across walls and ceiling, turning the entire gallery into an image.
