Ceramics have been part of my work since the 1980s, developing alongside painting rather than as a separate practice. Working with vessels, plates and other ceramic forms offered another surface for painting, but also a way of extending the image into physical space.

Many of these works originated in the Keramikwerkstatt Wilfriede Maaß in East Berlin, where artists worked directly with ceramic forms made in the studio. Painting moved from canvas onto objects that could be handled, used and placed within everyday surroundings.

This relationship between image and object later expanded into spatial installations. In Feuerbachs Zimmer (1992) and Das Blaue Zimmer (1997), painted ceramics became part of large wall paintings: vessels, figures, painting and architecture formed a single pictorial space.

The history of the Keramikwerkstatt and its artistic network was revisited in brennzeiten (2014), Zerbrechlich! Ton, Scheibe, Bild at the Brandenburgisches Landesmuseum für moderne Kunst (2022), and Die Keramikwerkstatt von Wilfriede Maaß at DAS MINSK in Potsdam (2026).
