Feuerbachs Zimmer
Feuerbachs Zimmer was created in 1992 for a solo exhibition at Werkstatt und Galerie Wilfriede Maaß in Berlin. Three large-scale wall paintings combined painting and ceramics into spatial installations.
The starting points were Anselm Feuerbach’s Plato’s Symposium and drawings by William Blake. Figures, vessels, and ornamental forms were removed from their historical contexts and brought together within a new pictorial space.
The ceramics were not placed as objects in front of the paintings but became part of the composition itself. Painted and physical objects merged into a single spatial image. In 1992, Christoph Tannert described this relationship as a Raumbild—a spatial image in which the painted ceramic vessels continually shift the viewer’s perspective.
Thirty years later, one of the wall paintings was reconstructed for Zerbrechlich! Ton, Scheibe, Bild: Künstlerkeramik at the Brandenburgisches Landesmuseum für moderne Kunst in Cottbus, bringing painting, ceramics, and space together once again.
