Echo Paintings
Since 2019, I have been returning to paintings I made in the late 1980s, a period shaped by my life and work in East Berlin and the upheavals around 1989. Many of these works are now held in public and private collections. Often, what remains accessible to me are reproductions in exhibition catalogues—images already transformed by print, scale, and time. I use them as starting points to paint selected works again. These new paintings are not copies or reconstructions. Forms, colors, and gestures shift as memories surface—of music in the studio, materials, particular situations and places. The earlier image encounters the present. The Echo Paintings emerge from the distance between then and now.
