Echo Paintings
Since 2019, I have been working on a group of paintings that originates from my works of the late 1980s. The impulse came through exhibitions, conversations, and a renewed engagement with that period—marked by the political and social shifts around 1989 and my life and work in East Berlin.
Many of the paintings from that time are now held in public and private collections. What remains accessible to me are often only reproductions in exhibition catalogues. Based on these mediated images, I begin to paint selected works again—not as copies, but as reconstructions shaped by distance.
The point of departure is a painting that no longer exists as a direct presence: it survives as print, as memory, as fragment. In the process of painting, forms, colors, and gestures shift. What emerges is not the same image, but a new version, marked by temporal distance and altered experience.
Repainting becomes a movement between present and past. Memories surface—of music in the studio, of materials, of specific moments. Painting becomes a site where time condenses and takes form again.
Seit 2019 arbeite ich an einer Werkgruppe, die von meinen Gemälden der späten 1980er Jahre ausgeht. Der Anstoß kam durch Ausstellungen, Gespräche und eine erneute Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Zeit – mit den Umbrüchen um 1989 und meiner damaligen Arbeitssituation in Ostberlin.
Viele der Bilder aus dieser Phase befinden sich heute in Sammlungen. Verfügbar sind mir oft nur noch Reproduktionen in Katalogen. Auf dieser Grundlage beginne ich, einzelne Arbeiten neu zu malen – nicht als Kopien, sondern als Annäherungen aus der Distanz.
Der Ausgangspunkt ist ein Bild, das nur noch vermittelt existiert: als Druck, als Erinnerung, als Fragment. Im Malprozess verschieben sich Formen, Farben und Gesten. Was entsteht, ist kein identisches Bild, sondern eine neue Fassung, geprägt von zeitlichem Abstand und veränderter Erfahrung.
Das Wieder-Malen wird dabei zu einer Bewegung zwischen Gegenwart und Vergangenheit. Erinnerungen tauchen auf – an Musik im Atelier, an Materialien, an konkrete Situationen. Malerei wird zu einem Ort, an dem sich Zeit verdichtet und neu formiert.
