2011 Ciurlionis

Čiurlionis / UTOPIA

Created in 2011 for the exhibition Im Zeitstrom verschollen, these drawings developed in dialogue with Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, whose music and painting form their point of departure. His compositions and visionary landscapes create a passage between sound and image that, for me, resonates with the imagined worlds of science fiction.

Fragments from the covers of the science-fiction series UTOPIA introduce another layer. I had collected these magazines as a teenager, and their imagery was among the early impulses that led me toward painting. In the drawings, fragments of these covers merge with landscapes by Čiurlionis, creating hybrid spaces between cosmos, memory, and imagined futures.

Čiurlionis’ music is not used as illustration, but as a second, invisible layer of the image. Its atmosphere, rhythm, and structure enter the process of drawing. Over the collaged fragments, I added words and title fragments from his work in ink, further intertwining language, image, and sound.

The series brings together two distant visual worlds—Čiurlionis’ symbolist universe and the popular imagery of postwar science fiction—through the filter of personal memory.
