Krieger & Helme

Krieger & Helme is a series of large-format drawings combining ink and drawing with black-and-white collage. The works incorporate photographs of Andreas Schlüter’s Dying Warriors from the Zeughaus in Berlin, alongside images of helmets and, at times, fragments drawn from fashion photography.

The collaged heads and helmets become points of departure for new figurations. Drawn lines extend, obscure, and transform the photographic fragments, shifting them between body, armour, ornament, and abstraction. Images associated with war and heroic representation encounter the codes and poses of fashion, creating an unstable interplay between vulnerability, masculinity, protection, and display.

The 70 × 50 cm sheets were originally wet-mounted with brown paper tape to prevent the collage from distorting the paper. The tape was left in place and became part of the works: a functional element that gradually assumed the role of a visual frame.

Nine drawings from the series were acquired for the collection of the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art (BLmK).

In 2026, works from Krieger & Helme were selected for the exhibition Gemachte Männer – Körper, Gestus, Habitus maskuliner Bildwelten, which examined constructions and transformations of masculinity from the Weimar era to the present.
